January 11, 2015: A major update of lots of entries yesterday and today as the campaign takes shape. I have decided to use full fledged D&D 5E but with a few things like Feats and certain classes removed. We have commitments from five players so far which bodes well. I think there are as many as three others who have an interest but I would like to cap it at six or seven at most. The plan remains to finalize our plan this month and to begin the first adventure in February (either first or second Friday perhaps?). I am also thinking that Friday nights may work best, every other week. We will see what works for everyone.

Outside of Obsidian Portal, I have the main text for the first set of possible adventures. I say “possible” because while there is a major theme to the campaign, there is a matrix of possible adventures. I want the players to have some say in how the campaign evolves but also want some guardrails to keep them on the path to the destiny of The Elsir Vale. Writing the hooks, links and adventures has been fun. It is really getting me excited to play.

While not fully embracing the style of the Lazy DM, I am taking a few of his ideas such as having the initial players establishing bonds at the beginning. Each one creates a relationship to the character sitting next to him so that each will begin with bonds to two other characters. Then as DM I can use those relationships to enhance the game. I am also allowing players to expand the pantheon, creating the details of their gods and churches if they are playing clerics or paladins. I really want us to build this story together and welcome input from the players.

There is one question for everyone which I will post to the forum: All five of the probable players are older than 17 and the campaign is likely to be somewhat adult in nature. Nothing too mature and no alcohol at the table (we are playing in an active office building) but one player has asked if his 12 year old could join. I guess I am non-committal but want to pose the question to the rest of the players.

January 15, 2017: Wow. Two years since I wrote that first message. We have been on an unexpectedly long hiatus but are thinking of getting back together. I am very excited about the prospects.

In our five actual sessions (we met a few other times but did not actually play D&D – we did play Battlestar Galactica the board game at least once), we almost finished the module “Legends Are Born, Not Made” by Chris Doyle of Goodman Games. I cannot say much about it yet since we are not quite done but I like the layered storyline and its ability to get a campaign started. I altered the adventure for 5E (it was originally written for 3.5) and changed the village of Dundraville to the village of Dauth to fit into the Elsir Vale.

When we return, I plan on starting exactly where we ended, in the rooms below Blogg’s lair. See the “Nearing The End?” entry in the Adventure Log.
